Contrary to popular belief, in extreme turns the strut towers should be trying to separate if I understand the physics correctly (somebody correct me if I'm wrong...and you know you're right). If anything the towers would lean together with the car on the ground, so you'd be preloading them inward.

Putting the car on jackstands would let the towers separate before you tightened them, which would not be ideal. Practically speaking, supporting the car from the frame rails vs strut towers should have such a small change as to be irrelevant.

But that's just me.
